Clubbed Thumb commissions, develops, and produces funny, strange, and provocative new plays by living American writers. Since its founding in 1996, the company has earned four OBIES and presented plays in every form of development, including over 75 full productions

Our plays vary in style and content, but are always intermission-less, 90 minutes or under, and unproduced in New York City. They feature substantial and challenging roles for both men and women, are questioning, formally inventive, theatrical, and, somewhere in the text, they contain a sense of humor.

PRODUCTION
Every June we present, Summerworks, our annual festival of new plays and our cornerstone programming. The festival opens with a night of thematically linked short pieces, and features three fully rehearsed, fully mounted new plays that each run for a week.

Every other year, we present a four-week run of a play. It is often a commission, and has often been through Summerworks and our development programs.

DEVELOPMENT
Throughout the year, we support the development of works-in-progress through informal, in-house readings, and two programs: Under Construction and New Play Boot Camp. Under Construction is a flexible program of workshops specifically tailored to the unique needs of our commissioned plays. New Play Boot Camp is an intensive script revision workshop in which, over the course of four four-hour sessions, a playwright produces three drafts a script, culminating in a reading of the work in progress.

COMMISSIONING
We regularly commission through other organizations (such as NYSCA) and offer our own BIENNIAL COMMISSION

SCRIPTS
Many of our plays are now in print, including in Funny, Strange, Provocative: Seven Plays from Clubbed Thumb. You can find them HERE.
